Our verdict
Blue Orange Digital is a strong pick for a private equity firm or a portfolio company that wants its data fixed and a first AI workflow running in production at a fixed, published price. Its case studies report large gains for Bregal Sagemount, BlackRock and Circle of Care, but nearly all of that evidence comes from Blue Orange itself, and its only two client reviews date from 2020 and 2021.
The right buyer
- Private equity deal teams that want company research automated. Its language model system on Databricks lets Bregal Sagemount research more than 200 companies a week instead of 20 to 30, with first-pass research down from 4 to 6 hours to under 30 minutes (Bregal Sagemount case study).
- Investment research groups that collect outside data by hand. For BlackRock it built automated collection from more than 1,000 sources, cutting analyst time spent gathering data from 30 to 40% of the week to under 5% (BlackRock case study).
- Companies grown by acquisition that need one set of numbers. Circle of Care’s monthly close fell from 20 to 25 days to 5 to 7 after a build of about 36 weeks on Google Cloud (Circle of Care case study).
- Buyers who want prices before the first call. It publishes $25,000 to $50,000 for an assessment and $75,000 to $350,000 for building a first workflow (pricing).
Reasons to look elsewhere
- Outside evidence is thin. Its directory listing shows two reviews, from 2020 and 2021, both for data migration or staff augmentation rather than AI work.
- Its case studies give before-and-after figures but no client quotes, so the results rest on its own account.
- It is priced for larger budgets. Its directory listing shows $150 to $199 an hour, and its Scale stage runs $250,000 to more than $1.5 million a year (pricing).
- Its offer is built around private equity firms and their portfolio companies (About page), so companies outside that world will find much of its process aimed at fund portfolios.
Blue Orange Digital, At A High Level
Blue Orange Digital is a data and AI consulting firm in New York that helps private equity firms and their portfolio companies find where AI will pay and then builds it into their operations.
- Founded in 2015 by Josh Miramant, its chief executive; Colin Van Dyke is chief technology officer and co-founder (About page). Miramant has said the firm grew out of the services work at an HR and talent analytics company he started in San Francisco (The Failure Gap).
- Oliver Wyman, the management consulting firm owned by Marsh McLennan, bought a minority stake on April 13, 2022 (PR Newswire). Blue Orange joined the AWS Partner Network in May 2022 (News).
- Builds on Databricks and Claude and connects to AWS, Azure, Snowflake, Microsoft Fabric, dbt, Fivetran and Cube (Partners). Production systems run in the client’s own cloud account, and it holds a SOC 2 Type II report (About page).
- Sells three fixed-price stages: Assess (2 to 4 weeks, $25,000 to $50,000), Build (3 to 6 months, $75,000 to $350,000, with the first workflow live by day 100) and Scale (annual, $250,000 to more than $1.5 million). An advisory retainer runs $15,000 to $30,000 a month with a three-month minimum (pricing; How we work).
- Says it has put more than 250 production systems live since 2016 (About page) and has a team of more than 150 people (The Failure Gap).
Its documented client work includes:
- A deal sourcing system for Bregal Sagemount, a private equity firm, on Databricks with models served through MosaicML, some fine-tuned on the firm’s past memos. It profiles and scores companies against the firm’s criteria, drafts outreach and first-draft investment memos, and writes results back to Salesforce (case study).
- An automated data collection system on AWS for BlackRock that crawls filings, company sites, news and alternative data, extracts entities with language models and matches each mention to BlackRock’s security master (case study).
- A unified data layer on Google Cloud, BigQuery and dbt for Circle of Care, a Texas children’s therapy provider backed by Two Sigma Impact. Integrating an acquired practice now takes 4 to 6 weeks instead of 3 to 6 months (case study).
- A graph data store on AWS Neptune for Avison Young, the commercial real estate firm, linking properties with foot traffic and spending data. Complex location queries dropped from 15 to 45 minutes to 2 to 5 seconds (case study).
