Our verdict
Appsilon is the firm large pharmaceutical and biotech companies hire to build R Shiny applications for clinical data, run GxP-compliant statistical computing environments on Posit infrastructure, and move analysts from SAS to open-source R, with delivery teams in Poland. It does not publish rates; outside listings put it at about $100 to $149 an hour, with projects starting around $10,000. That is mid-range among the firms reviewed here that list hourly rates, which run from about $25 to $49 at 10Pearls to about $200 to $300 at Xyonix. Other firms reviewed here that serve pharma and life sciences clients include Arionkoder of Boston and Enthought of Austin. It is a strong choice for a pharma analytics team that needs validated R and Shiny work, but most of its published results come from clients it does not identify.
The right buyer
- Pharma analytics and biostatistics teams that need clinical data apps in R and Shiny. A biotech’s critical app went from a load of more than 7 minutes to 30 to 60 seconds (biotech case study), and a biopharma’s quality reports went from 5 weeks to 5 minutes (biopharma case study).
- Pharma platform teams that need a GxP-ready statistical computing environment on Posit. A top 50 pharma company replaced software costing $930,000 a year and cut its monthly AWS bill by 85% in the first month (top 50 pharma case study).
- Statistical programming groups moving from SAS to open-source R. Appsilon offers validated open-source migration or a multilanguage setup, and it has a seat on the pharmaverse council (SAS migration page).
- Pharma teams starting with AI under audit rules. Its four AI paths run from a one-week proof of concept to a full AI-core system, each with a person who signs off by name and a written record of every run (AI for pharma page).
Reasons to look elsewhere
- It publishes no rates, minimums, or package prices (homepage).
- Its work centers on pharma and life sciences, so a buyer in another industry finds little relevant work (homepage).
- Most published results are for unidentified clients, described only as a top 10 pharma, a top 50 pharma, a biotech, or a biopharma (case studies).
- A US pharma client found the European support hours a challenge, and two other reviewers mentioned contract flexibility and vacation-time planning (see the client reviews in the “What clients say” section).
- Its AI offering is newer than its Shiny work: recordings from its first Validated AI for Pharma Summit were posted in October 2026 (LinkedIn).
Appsilon, At A High Level
We read Appsilon’s homepage, LinkedIn page, partner pages, and case studies to establish what the firm builds and how large it is. Appsilon is a data science and software company in Warsaw, Poland, that builds R Shiny applications, statistical computing environments, and AI systems for pharmaceutical and life sciences companies. Its LinkedIn page lists Rhino, an open-source framework for building Shiny apps with software engineering practices, as a product, alongside statistical computing environments, SAS-to-open-source migration, and AI services for regulated drug development (LinkedIn).
- Founded in 2013 and headquartered in Warsaw, with a second office in Gdańsk, Poland (LinkedIn).
- Lists 85 employees on LinkedIn in a company size band of 51 to 200 people (LinkedIn). It says it hires 1% of more than 15,000 applicants a year (homepage).
- Says 8 of the 10 largest pharmaceutical companies use its services and that it has delivered more than 150 projects for pharma companies (homepage).
- Contributes to open-source tools including Rhino, teal, and Axon.R, says its packages have been downloaded nearly 500,000 times, and takes part in Pharmaverse and R Consortium working groups (homepage; Rhinoverse page).
- Is a Posit Certified Partner and reseller, and its homepage lists Posit, AWS, Databricks, and Domino among its partners (Posit partner page; homepage).
- Offers four AI paths for pharma: LLM-supported development, AI added to an existing app, workflow automation with its open-source Mediforce platform, and strategic AI systems (AI for pharma page).
Its documented client work includes:
- A custom R and Python analytics platform for a top 50 pharma company, built on Kubernetes, Terraform, and Posit before a license renewal date, replacing software that cost $930,000 a year and used by five business units (case study).
- A migration of a top 50 pharma company’s outdated Posit stack, spread across three modified environments, to a GxP-compliant Kubernetes-integrated environment with no workflow disruption (case study).
- Two senior R developers who joined the core team of {teal}, an open-source Shiny framework for clinical data exploration, for a top 10 pharma company; ten packages reached production, and the framework is used by more than 30 studies (case study).
- Performance work on a biotech’s clinical data app, cutting load time from more than 7 minutes to 30 to 60 seconds through caching and direct database access (case study).
- Automation of 85% of GxP document generation for a biopharma company, reducing report time from about 5 weeks to about 5 minutes, with reported savings of over $1 million across 3 years (case study).
Scores by criterion
We scored Appsilon on eight weighted criteria, drawing on its case studies, partner and service pages, open-source work, and client reviews, to show where its public record is strong and where it is thin. Commercial clarity scores lowest because Appsilon publishes no rates.
| Criterion | Weight | Score | Basis |
|---|---|---|---|
| Production track record | 20% | 8.0 | More than 150 pharma projects reported, with measured results at a top 10 pharma, a top 50 pharma, a biotech, and a biopharma; the clients are unnamed. |
| Technical depth | 15% | 8.0 | Core contributor to the teal framework, builder of Rhino and Axon.R, and platform work on Posit, Kubernetes, Terraform, and Ansible. |
| Industry depth | 10% | 8.5 | Work centers on pharma and life sciences, from clinical data apps to GxP platforms, with a seat on the pharmaverse council. |
| Delivery model and handoff | 15% | 7.0 | Delivery managers, biostatisticians, and programmers on each project; client reviews mention European support hours, limited contract flexibility, and gaps in vacation planning. |
| Commercial clarity | 10% | 5.0 | No rates or package prices published. |
| Platform independence | 10% | 6.5 | Centered on R, Shiny, and Posit, with AWS, Databricks, and Domino partners and open-source tooling that it says reduces vendor lock-in. |
| Stability and scale | 10% | 7.0 | Operating since 2013 with about 85 people on LinkedIn, privately held. |
| Independent evidence | 10% | 7.5 | Posit Certified Partner, contributor to Pharmaverse and R Consortium working groups, and written client reviews from a hospital, a manufacturer, and pharma teams. |
| Overall | 100% | 7.3 | Weighted average |
Where Appsilon fits and where it does not
We rated Appsilon against four jobs drawn from its case studies and service pages: a clinical Shiny app, a GxP platform on Posit, a SAS migration, and an AI project outside pharma. The ratings show where its published evidence is deep and where it stops.
| Need | Fit | Why |
|---|---|---|
| R Shiny apps for clinical and safety data | Strong | Biotech app load time cut from more than 7 minutes to 30 to 60 seconds; biopharma report automation; core work on teal. |
| GxP statistical computing environments on Posit | Strong | Top 50 pharma platform replacing a $930,000 license and a GxP-compliant Posit migration on Kubernetes. |
| SAS to open-source R migration | Good | A dedicated service with validated open-source and multilanguage options; published results lean toward platforms and apps. |
| AI projects outside pharmaceuticals and life sciences | Weak | Its AI offering, case studies, and summit are aimed at regulated pharma work. |
Buyers comparing Polish data firms can also look at Sunscrapers, a smaller Warsaw Python and data team for finance and healthcare, and STX Next, a Poznań data and AI consultancy of more than 450 specialists.
What clients say about Appsilon
Appsilon’s homepage publishes three client quotes, and written client reviews from a hospital, a manufacturer, and pharma analytics teams add outside feedback. The first quote was chosen by Appsilon for its homepage.
“We rely on Appsilon’s expertise to support the build and maintenance of critical clinical reporting software based in R and Shiny.”
“The team was able to get up to speed with a very complex project quickly and make strategic and novel improvements.”
“Thanks to the implementation of a standardized development framework the time from creating a new application to a first viable product has dramatically decreased.”
Three reviewers raised things to improve.
“They’re not very flexible on contract terms, and that’s one thing that could be better.”
“It was known the support hours will be in EU but the customer is in US. The time difference was a challenge, but we made it work.”
“I think they could have improved the long-term planning for the project phase based on team members’ vacation time so that defined timelines could be met.”
