Our verdict

BairesDev is a nearshore software and AI development firm founded in 2009 by Nacho De Marco and Paul Azorin, headquartered in San Francisco, with most of its engineers in Latin America. Most of its work is staff augmentation and dedicated teams, and its AI development and implementation work covers generative AI products, retrieval and agent systems, and machine learning on AWS and model platforms such as Anthropic's Claude. It says it has more than 4,000 engineers and 500 clients and has never raised outside funding. In a January 2023 press release it reported annual recurring revenue of $338 million for 2022, up 71% from $198 million in 2021 (About; Clutch; BairesDev press release).

Its best-documented AI build is the engine behind Echo Harbor, an AI media analysis company. A BairesDev team that grew to 10 to 19 engineers built a platform on Anthropic's Claude models that takes in articles, PDFs, audio and video and returns claims, quotes, citations and bias scores tied to the source, plus three products on top of it, over about 30 two-week sprints; the Echo Harbor News site now holds more than 181,000 articles. For a regulatory technology client it built a multi-stage system on Amazon Bedrock that checks policies against federal regulations, which BairesDev says cut assessment time by about 95%. On Clutch, Freeplay's co-founder and CTO describes BairesDev engineers building his company's integrations with OpenAI, Anthropic and Azure language models (Echo Harbor; AWS partner page; Clutch).

BairesDev suits a US company that wants nearshore engineers in its own time zone to build an AI product or add language model features quickly and at mid-range rates, especially when the company will direct the work itself. Buyers who want an AI strategy partner with deep industry practices, or AI results confirmed by many named clients, will find thinner evidence here.

The right buyer

  • Startups and product companies building on language models that need engineers fast; Freeplay used a BairesDev team of two to five for its MVP and its OpenAI, Anthropic and Azure integrations.
  • Companies that want a full AI product built end to end, as with the Echo Harbor platform on Claude, delivered over about 30 two-week sprints.
  • AWS customers in regulated fields that want a Bedrock-based document or compliance system; BairesDev is an AWS Advanced Tier Partner with 50+ AWS certifications.
  • US teams that want engineers working their hours: Clutch reviewers often cite the shared time zone and quick replacement of engineers who do not fit.

Reasons to look elsewhere

  • Only 2 of its 63 Clutch reviews cover AI development, so most independent praise is about staff augmentation and general software.
  • A director of development on Clutch said there was a lot of developer churn early on while the team learned the business.
  • Clutch's own summary of its reviews notes concerns about rate increases and budget management (Clutch).
  • Apart from Echo Harbor, the AI case studies on its AWS partner page do not name the client.
