Our verdict

Keyhole Software is an AI development, implementation and consulting firm in Lenexa, Kansas, founded in 2008 by Chris DeSalvo and David Pitt. It builds and modernizes custom software in Java, .NET and JavaScript, and its AI practice covers enterprise AI integration, retrieval-augmented generation (RAG), which lets a language model answer from a company's own documents and data, and AI-accelerated development of new and replacement systems. Every consultant is a full-time employee based in the US, and the firm says they average more than 17 years of experience. It reports more than 75 full-time consultants, does not publish revenue and has never taken outside investment (Our story; Highlights; Clutch).

Its clearest AI project is the replacement of a Kansas City insurer's low-code platform, covering the user interface, services, database and admin tools. Keyhole says two of its senior consultants and nine client engineers, using parallel AI coding agents split by domain, put the replacement on track for about five months against an 18 to 24 month estimate, with a rule that nothing is committed without human approval; the case study says the work is in its final stage. Keyhole also built a governed RAG proof of concept that lets staff at a business-to-business travel media company query XML-heavy data in plain language, and an app for a global insurance software company that estimates car damage from photos and flags low-confidence estimates for manual review (insurance case study; RAG case study; damage detection). Northwell Health, New York State's largest healthcare provider, has been a client for more than 13 years (Highlights).

Keyhole is a good fit for a mid-market or enterprise team in insurance, finance or healthcare that wants senior US consultants to modernize a core system with AI coding tools, or to add RAG to internal data, and leave its own staff able to run the result. Buyers who want independent client reviews or a large team at nearshore rates should look elsewhere.

The right buyer

  • Insurers, banks and other regulated companies replacing an old or low-code core system, as the Kansas City insurer did with two Keyhole consultants and its own engineers.
  • Companies that need all work done by US-based employees, with no offshore teams or subcontractors, which Keyhole states for every consultant (Clutch).
  • Teams that want to try a language model on their own data with audit logging and per-query cost tracking in place, as in its RAG proof of concept for a travel media company.
  • Organizations that want their engineers coached along the way: its Clutch profile and insurance case study describe mentoring, architecture documentation and handoff for long-term ownership.

Reasons to look elsewhere

  • Clutch shows no client reviews, so nearly all published praise comes from Keyhole's own site and case studies.
  • Its most detailed AI case studies are recent and partly unfinished: the insurance replacement was still on track for launch when published, and the travel media work was a proof of concept.
  • Clutch lists hourly rates of $100 to $149, higher than nearshore and offshore firms.
  • Keyhole publishes its own 2026 ranking of agentic AI development firms and places itself first, so treat that list as marketing.
