Kasia Borowska is the co-founder and chief product officer of Brainpool AI, an AI consulting and development firm in London, England. She trained in mathematics and cognitive science, started the company straight out of university, and often speaks in interviews about AI safety and regulation (Authority Magazine).
Mathematics and Cognitive Science
She earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics at the University of Greenwich and a master’s in cognitive and decision sciences at University College London, and worked in business-to-business marketing (Brainpool). “At that time, I had no idea how to effectively apply any of this knowledge in real life to truly make a difference,” she said of her studies (Authority Magazine).
Starting Brainpool at UCL
She met Peter Bebbington at UCL, and the two set up Brainpool as a marketplace for data scientists who wanted industry work. It later became a consultancy that builds AI for companies (Authority Magazine), and Companies House lists her as a director since April 2016 (Companies House).
When she began selling AI to businesses in 2017, she said, “many peoples’ only association with AI was The Terminator.” The pandemic later cost the firm many of its clients, which she said “forced us to start again and grow from the ground up” (Authority Magazine).
Arguing for Agnostic AI
She argues that companies should avoid tying themselves to one AI vendor, an approach she calls agnostic AI, so they can choose a different model for each task and switch as regulations change (Authority Magazine).
She has also called for international regulation of advanced AI, and she says Brainpool will not take work on autonomous weapons, the fossil fuel industry, the Metaverse or artificial general intelligence until the value alignment problem is solved (Authority Magazine).
