Our verdict

MILL5 has a strong showcase project: it added AI and machine learning to Olympus’s smart operating room software, running models at the edge across more than 3,000 operating rooms and cutting room turnover times by 30% (MILL5; MILL5). It suits a manufacturer, medical device maker, or financial firm on Azure that wants one team for AI, data, IoT, and 24/7 support, and it is less suited to a buyer who wants a pure strategy firm or a team built around AWS.

The right buyer

  • Medical device and industrial companies with connected equipment. Its Olympus work runs quantized AI models at the edge so video data stays on site (MILL5).
  • Companies on Microsoft Azure. It is a Microsoft Solutions Partner, and its CTO is a Microsoft MVP in AI (MILL5; MILL5).
  • Buyers who want the system run after launch. It offers 24/7 managed services with monitoring, incident response, and performance tuning (MILL5 on LinkedIn).

Reasons to look elsewhere

  • Much of its work runs on Microsoft Azure, so a buyer committed to AWS or Google Cloud should check depth on that platform.
  • Part of its engineering team works from Colombia, so a buyer who needs an all-onshore team should ask about staffing.

MILL5, At A High Level

MILL5 was founded in 2015 by Shri Bhupathi, its CEO, and Richard Crane, its chief AI officer and CTO, who earlier worked at Microsoft (MILL5; MILL5; MILL5). It is based at 33 Broad Street in Boston and has teams in the United States, Latin America, Europe, and Asia, with a chief operating officer for Latin America and current hiring in Colombia (MILL5 on LinkedIn; MILL5). It works in four ways: strategy work, fixed-scope accelerators built on reference architectures, custom builds, and managed operations (MILL5 on LinkedIn). Its industries include manufacturing, medical devices and healthcare, banking and financial services, utilities, logistics, and retail (MILL5 on LinkedIn).

  • 201 to 500 employees on LinkedIn; we estimate annual revenue at $18 million to $25 million (MILL5 on LinkedIn).
  • The Olympus work moved device data to Azure, cut on-premises costs by millions of dollars, and was featured at Microsoft Inspire (MILL5).
  • Past clients of its founders include Fidelity, State Street, BNY Mellon, John Hancock, Wayfair, eBay, and Staples (MILL5; MILL5).
  • Certifications across Azure, GCP, AWS, Fabric, Snowflake, AI and ML, DevOps, and Power BI for its technical staff (MILL5 on LinkedIn).

Scores by criterion

We scored MILL5 from its case studies, leadership pages, and LinkedIn company profile. Technical depth scores highest because of its edge AI and IoT work; commercial clarity and platform independence score lowest because rates are not public and most work runs on Azure.

Where MILL5 fits

MILL5 is used by medical device makers, manufacturers, banks, and asset managers that want AI built into their products or operations and want the same firm to run it. It is best for edge AI, IoT data, and Azure data platforms. On price it sits in the mid-market tier, with Latin American engineers keeping rates below Boston-only shops. On this site it competes with Gorilla Logic and Azumo for nearshore AI builds and with Keyhole Software for custom software.
